POPS
is a non-profit, volunteer organization who's staff and
participants are all dedicated to providing quality live
theater to Okinawa.
We
put on 5-6 shows a year. Show ideas are submitted
and voted on in the summer by members of the club
(but, if you are willing to be the director, your
submission will probably be selected).
All
money raised is used to put on more shows and annually
award scholarships to deserving High School seniors
who wish to pursue "the arts" in college.
Much of the tech
stuff (set, lights, sound, props, ect.) has fallen
onto the backs of the same (too few) dedicated
volunteers. Be a part of the most important & exciting aspect
of any production (sorry actors, it's true!). Set
construction, Stage effects, Sound effects, Microphone/Speaker
placement, Lighting effects, Fog/smoke, Custom built
props...
Making magic takes talent, craft and
teamwork. Not sure how? We happily train newbies.
Bring your ideas. Bring your friends. Bring your
enthusiasm to OUR Community Theater! POPs.

Based on the 1975 novel by E. L. Doctorow, Ragtime tells the story of three groups in America, represented by Coalhouse Walker Jr., a Harlem musician; Mother, the matriarch of a WASP family in New Rochelle, NY; and Tateh, a Latvian Jewish immigrant. Historical figures such as Houdini, Evelyn Nesbit, Booker T. Washington, J. P. Morgan, Henry Ford, Stanford White, Harry K. Thaw, Admiral Peary, Matthew Henson, and Emma Goldman also appear. The music includes marches, cakewalks, gospel and ragtime. The show is mostly sung-through, with very little spoken dialogue.
